If you grew up in Kingsville, you likely know about this famous philanthropist! Jack Miner was born in Ohio in 1867 but moved to Gosfeild Township when he was 13. Miner worked as a trapper for some time but hated what hunting was doing to wildlife populations. In 1904, Miner built a sanctuary for geese and ducks and began tracking their migration patters through banding techniques. This data inspired legislation in The US and Canada which protects migratory species.
The week of Miner’s birthday (April 10th) was named National Wildlife Week, and there is a school named after him, Kingsville. Jack Miner’s Sanctuary still provides haven to a variety of injured wild birds and offers educational tours.
Did you know this Canadian music icon was born in Windsor? Born Eilleen Regina Edwards, Shania Twain and her family lived here until her parents divorced when she was two years old. After moving to Timmins, Twain’s family struggled with money. At only eight years old, Twain began singing at bars to help supplement her family’s income. From then on, Twain’s passion was music.
This hardworking singer-songwriter has enjoyed decades of success, and her third Las Vegas residency has been announced for 2024.
We would be doing a disservice to Windsor Essex County if we didn’t mention this iconic sports figure! Bob Probert played for Detroit’s beloved Red Wings for nine years, then another seven for the Chicago Blackhawks. Probert was one of the most prolific “enforcers” in the National Hockey League, consistently racking up a remarkable number of penalty minutes.
In 2010, Probert passed away in Essex County after suffering a heart attack while boating, but his memory lives on as a Windsor icon!
