Raise a Glass to The Oldest Pubs in Windsor Essex County

Posted Aug 29, 2023

Some of Windsor Essex County’s longest running businesses are bars – ones you can still visit today! Discover local history and enjoy a pint, as residents have done for centuries.

1. The Dominion House Tavern

The original Dominion House was built in 1859 – over 140 years ago! The Dominion House was a local favourite, operating as a hotel and catering to farmers on their way to Detroit to deliver produce. When the original building burnt down in 1883, it was rebuilt at its current location within a year.

Until the 1970s, The Dominion House was popular with lawyers because The County Court operated down the street at Mackenzie Hall. Since then, the English-style tavern has retained popularity with university students and locals. You can catch live music most nights and even play beach volleyball at their courts outside.

2. The Victoria Tavern

Built in 1903 by Charles Chilver, the Victoria Tavern and Hotel has been a well-known local hangout for more than a century. The original Victoria Tavern was located in the large white house next door to its current location and was in operation from 1897-1903. Interestingly, Henry Ford signed documents to purchase Walkerville Wagon Works in The Victora Tavern in 1904, the company which became the Ford Motor Company of Canada.

When you visit The Victoria Tavern today, you’ll find a sign outside that reads “Ladies and Escorts”. It is a remnant from when women had to use a separate entrance and sit in a separate section of the bar. Don’t be deterred! Inside you’ll find intimate live music, karaoke and delicious pub fare.

3. The Barrel House Draught Co. & Grill

Though this restaurant and bar opened in 2013, the building it operates out of dates to 1885. 3199 Sandwich Street was one of the first post offices in Essex County – they were typically run out of The Postmaster’s home before that. It was a multipurpose building and also served as a general store.

Today, The Barrel House serves delicious pub fare and has a beautiful patio. When you stop by, take a moment to check out the mural of The Battle of Windsor along the west side of the building.
