Summer has officially arrived in Windsor and Essex County! We’re lucky to have a number of excellent beaches in the area – lets dive in and rank them.
Point Pelee Northwest Beach – A Clear Winner
While beachgoers have to pay admission to Point Pelee National Park, the amenities and additional attractions are worth it. It’s easy to make a whole day out of a trip to Point Pelee – consider going for a hike or kayak before heading down to the Northwest Beach. The beach itself is large, has well-kept bathrooms and many pavilions nearby if you want to have a shady lunch.
Cedar Island Beach – Sandy and Serene
This quiet, shady beach is an excellent spot for families. There is a playground located just off the beach and it is rarely crowded. There are often people fishing along the break wall and troops of sail boats to watch from the beach. It is easy to have a peaceful afternoon lounging at Cedar Island Beach.
Colchester Beach – A Bustling Bay
This beach can be somewhat more crowded than Point Pelee and Cedar Island Beach – it is a great spot for groups of friends and younger people. That’s not to say it’s a bad spot for families – there is a splashpad and playground at the top of the hill, and multiple spots to eat nearby. Additionally, this beach has an accessible path on the beach for those who use wheelchairs.
Sandpoint Beach – A City Oasis
Located on the cusp between Windsor and Tecumseh, this is the only beach in Essex County that has lifeguards on duty during the summer. For this reason, and because there is a playground located right on the beach, Sandpoint is an awesome beach for families. You could easily spend a serene afternoon here watching lake freighters make their way down the Detroit River. If you want more excitement, there is also a spot to launch and rent kayaks!
