A Winery Older than Canada – Vin Villa and Other Must-See Heritage Sites

Posted Jun 6, 2023

Windsor Essex has incredible historic sites tucked away across the county. Our area has played a significant historical role, from pivotal battles in the War of 1812 to the arguably equally important establishment of Canada’s first commercial winery. Our history is more exciting than you may think, and these three landmarks are still standing to tell the story.

Vin Villa Winery – Pelee Island

A day trip to Pelee Island isn’t complete without a stop at Vin Villa – a winery older than Canada itself. Though it may be in ruins now, this site was once home to Canada’s first commercial winery. Vin Villa was founded in 1866 by the British and is over 150 years old. Vin Villa’s grounds, ruins and beautiful cellars are currently used as a wedding and event venue, and also hosts tours. Do yourself a favour and book a wine tasting in Canada’s oldest wine cellar next time you’re on the island!

Fort Malden - Amherstburg

Fort Malden was built in 1795 by the British and played a key role in the war of 1812; Sir Isaac Brock and Chief Tecumseh met there to plan The Siege of Detroit. This was the battle that allowed the British to take Fort Detroit for more than a year. In the 1800s, it curiously also served as an asylum. Fort Malden is now a National Historic Site of Canada, and its museum is open to the public. Book a tour and soak in the storied, and somewhat spooky history of Fort Malden.

The Duff-Baby House – Sandwich Towne

This home was built in 1798 by Alexander Duff, who founded Sandwich Towne. James Baby, the next owner, reportedly hosted Chief Tecumseh for dinner there. It is now held in the Ontario Heritage Trust and is open to the public for tours.

The museum features artifacts from The War of 1812, but also has an expansive collection that celebrates our area’s French history. This includes a Parisian sundial made in 1671, brought to Windsor by Pierre Descomptes dit Labadie, one of the first people to receive a land concession on the Canadian side of the river.
