Discover the Species of Windsor Essex

Posted May 8, 2023

Windsor and Essex County’s wetlands have always played an important role in supporting diverse local wildlife populations. These animals have shaped our history and are sure to shape our future. Learn about three of the most significant local species in Windsor and Essex County and where to find them!

The Beaver - French trappers were some of the first Europeans to settle in Essex County and hunted for prized beaver pelts. Beaver populations suffered as a result of overhunting and pollution but have rebounded in recent years, indicating healthy wetlands. Head to Holiday Beach, Turkey Creek or Point Pelee to try and catch a glimpse of one.

The Great Blue Heron - These large, beautiful birds are one of the most distinct species in Essex County. They’re skilled fisherman, but also eat small mammals and birds. They’re commonly found along Lake Erie in Kingsville and Leamington, but you may have luck in any swampy area or creek.

White-tailed Deer - You’ve probably come across White-Tailed Deer if you live in the county. Though they’re cute, wildlife organizations warn against feeding them because they often can’t digest what people give them. Acclimatizing deer to urban areas also increases their risk of car accidents. Instead of feeding them, stop by Ojibway Park year-round and watch these beauties from afar!

Apart from the animals mentioned here, Essex County is home to 240 federally or provincially rare species of plants and animals.

Visit The Essex Region Conservation Authority's Website for more information about our wonderful wildlife and to learn how to best support it.
