Home Improvement Projects You Can Do During Winter

There are many reasons to take advantage of the colder season, especially if you're planning on selling your home in the warmer months. Renovation costs are sometimes lower in the winter, with some contractors offering deals and savings during the slow season. That said, remodeling your house while prices are compatible with your budget, without being exposed to the cold elements outside, can be a great way to chase your winter blues away.

Indoor Upgrades

Revamp Your Kitchen - Replacing locksets, door handles, and cabinetry hardware is an easy update that you can do during the winter. Replacing the kitchen backsplash is a great way to introduce colour or playfulness into a kitchen without spending too much money.

Laundry Room Makeover - Add shelves, paint the walls in a cheery color, and buy yourself some new laundry bins to keep your clothes and supplies sorted. And if you crave a more energy-efficient washer and dryer, know that appliances typically go on sale over the course of the winter months and holidays.  A thorough cleaning, an infusion of baskets, and some well-placed hooks can turn the laundry room into a space where you'll actually enjoy spending time.

Upgrade Your Lighting - Replace all of your bulbs and maybe get a new fixture to help keep your home bright and inviting, no matter the weather. You can also consider swapping out your old bulbs for natural spectrum light bulbs, which provide the same broad spectrum of natural daylight.

Refurbish Doors - Instead of emptying your pockets to replace your interior doors, you can simply paint them to make them look more expensive or modern, install decorative doorknobs to add flare, and/or add molding to flat doors to create dimension.
Fresh Coats of Paint - Good deals can be found for paint and supplies during the late fall and winter. Winter also is when professional painters have fewer clients, which translates to lower prices. What’s more, there’s less moisture and humidity in the air during the winter, which means paint bonds to surfaces better and dries faster.

Redo the Floors - Changing the floors is a great way to update your home and increase resale value. If you want hardwood floors, install your flooring in winter anyway, since floors installed in summer tend to shrink more when colder weather comes around.

Work Outside

Remove Dead/Dying Trees - Tree companies become busy in the late spring and summer when winds and stormy weather necessitate emergency tree removal. The colder ground also makes tree removal advantageous during the winter. Frozen ground can keep nearby plants in place, making the removal less disruptive to the surroundings.

Prepare Your Lawn for Spring - A little bit of care when winter starts will ensure a lush yard in the spring. Mow and fertilize your lawn and remove loose items like pet toys or furniture so you don’t get dead spots in the grass when the warmer weather arrives.
